What We Do

TMI is the destination management section of the Tourism Society.  It exists to provide support and help to its members through:

  • Delivering professional development via its national events programme, including the Annual Convention and Hot Topic
  • Networking and update events and opportunities at local/regional level
  • Representing the interests of destination management on national bodies, such as British Tourism Development Committee and Partners for England, and responding to consultations by government and VisitBritain, among others

You can find out more about our Mission, Aims and Objectives in our Corporate Plan.

TMI’s Executive Board are elected from the membership at the Annual General Meeting, with each Board member serving a two year term.  The Executive Board take on the strategic direction and day to day operation of TMI.  They meet four times each year, and work virtually in between meetings.  They are supported by the National Council, consisting of the Executive Board and National and Regional Representatives, which meets twice a year.  You can find Minutes of these meetings here.

TMI is working with the Tourism Society to create a network of activities across the UK.  TMI National Representatives in Scotland and Wales work with Tourism Society colleagues on the Chapter Committees to provide networking and development events, and across England, Regional Representatives are either working with existing Tourism Society Chapters in Yorkshire and Cumbria, or looking to establish new Chapters where none currently exist.  We aim to develop small regional teams, and members interested in helping out and getting involved in their area are encouraged to contact their National or Regional Representative.

The  Communications and Events Working Groups, led by the Head of Events and Communications, are responsible for much of the work involved in planning the Annual Convention and Hot Topic events.  The Executive warmly encourages members to get involved in these Groups which also work very much via e-mail and phone, with occasional meetings.  If you would like to find out more, please contact the Head of Events.
