View from a Student Placement
15th January 2018
I hope you all had a lovely Christmas? and are settling back into uni life ready for another semester!
I apologise it’s been a while since you’ve heard from me, like Abi I have been an extremely busy bee!
As Abi mentioned in her last blog, I’m currently on my placement in my home town of Eastbourne, the sunshine coast (well, sometimes!). 6 months down with 6 months to go, I actually can’t quite believe how quickly it has gone but I’ve loved every moment!
I work alongside the tourism marketing team in an intern role established through my contacts in the TMI.
The role is allowing me to put everything I’ve learnt over my two years at uni into practise and gain practical skills which apply to the tourism industry. It is extremely insightful and I feel I’m gaining more experience every day.
I’m sure there are plenty of you out there who are looking for placements, my advice to you is don’t give up! Many people plan on taking a placement but give up after not finding what they want or getting rejected. Keep on trying; sometimes it’s who you know that gets your foot in the door.
I would strongly recommend using your contacts from the networking events at TMI, they’re the people you have a common interest with and can approach, what’s the worst that could happen? They say no and you ask someone else. Even if you don’t personally know someone, if you have their email address and are confident in messaging them to enquire about a placement go for it, you have absolutely nothing to lose.
I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for TMI!
If you have exams/deadlines/dissertations to write and placements to look for, the very best of luck I’m sure you’ll ace it!
