Upgrade to Fellow of the Tourism Management Institute (FTMI)

Fellowship of the Tourism Management Institute is conferred by the TMI Executive Board. The Institute has a mechanism through which existing Full members (MTMI) can seek to attain Fellow status. However, there is no automatic progression, as TMI’s view is that the award of Fellowship should be used to recognise significant contribution to the Institute and the profession, as well as experience and a high degree of professionalism. The standard is high, but achievable.

Members seeking to upgrade to Fellow should do so in writing, and provide the names and contact details of their current employer or last employer or a recent client and an existing Fellow or a voting member of the TMI Executive Board/ National Council as referees. The application should indicate that the member meets the following requirements:

  1. Has been a Full member of the Institute (MTMI) for at least five years
  2. Demonstrates a minimum of ten years' experience in tourism at a senior level
  3. Demonstrates:
    1. Active involvement in/contribution to the work of the Institute
      AND
    2. Significant achievement/contribution to the wider profession of destination management such as publications, original research or contribution to national/regional policy or strategy
      AND
    3. Evidence of commitment to their own Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
  4. Their application is endorsed by an existing Fellow or voting member of the TMI Executive Board/National Council

If you wish to apply for upgrade or to nominate a Member for upgrade, please provide the information requested on the application form in confidence to the President, either using the online application form or by downloading the form and e-mailing it with any supporting information to president@tmi.org.uk. Applications will be considered by the TMI Professional Development Group who will make recommendations to the Executive Board.

The Executive Board have agreed that under normal circumstances Fellowships will be awarded once a year.  The generic timetable is:

Call for nominations/applications:May
Deadline for receipt of nominations:late June
Referees contacted:July
Consideration by Prof Devt. Working Group:July/August

Fellowships are normally conferred by the TMI Executive during the summer and candidates advised as soon as a decision has been made. The public announcement and presentation of certificates is generally carried out at the Annual Convention.
